When we purchased the Enchanted Farmhouse, I envisioned the basement to be storage. Lots and lots of storage. We were asked if we wanted to keep the pool table. The kids (and hubby) gave a unanimous thumbs up. I agreed not to veto it as long as no one made me play pool (it’s not my favorite activity). So stay it did. Because it was so large and the desire to create a “family room” around it, my dreams of storage went away (though I was given a bedroom upstairs to store our party, hobby, and craft supplies and a work space, so in a way I did win).
With a pool table, a full-size refrigerator, and my hubby’s desire for a huge TV, I started planning a space that would make the new house feel like home.
Flooring Upgrade
It began with new flooring. I wanted LVP, but the hubby wanted carpet to make it cozier. We had Natural Twine by Empire Today installed. He was right. We do have a utility room with vinyl flooring (that we kept) for muddy shoes and a space to clean the animals.
Dehumidifier for a Healthier Space
Basements can be prone to moisture issues, so we added an Auseo 50 pint Dehumidifier to help keep the air dry and fresh. This has made a significant difference in reducing musty odors and preventing mold growth. If you have a basement that tends to get damp, a high-quality dehumidifier is a must-have.
Paint and Decor
The next big decision was the paint. We chose a white with blue undertones to brighten up the basement called “Ice Cube” by Sherman Williams. Fortunately, it is a walk-out basement with lots of windows, so the natural light and the white do the job. I had a can of Heirloom Traditions All-in-One paint in the color Amalfi left over from a table I painted when we rented the beach house in Mission Beach last year, along with a lot of beach house decor. Additionally, it is a teal shade. As former San Francisco Bay Area residents and sports fans, it also complemented the sports memorabilia we have from our teams and especially the San Jose Sharks.
Creating the Basement Bar
I decided to make the cabinets a bar back, added subway tile to the cabinet back and counter, and wine glass holders under the shelves. We added a bar from Walmart and bar stools from Bed, Bath & Beyond in front of the Amalfi cabinets. We moved the full-size refrigerator next to the French doors. A shelf from Walmart holds additional appliances and games. A bottom-loading water dispenser and water jugs provide 20 gallons of drinking water, with a stand to hold three extra 5-gallon bottles. We removed the ridiculously heavy lamp shade but have yet to decide on a lamp for this room. This, along with some decor, completed our basement bar.
Game Room Setup
The basement room is a very long room with the pool table at the end closest to our bar. We mounted our 52-inch television to the wall above the pool table. We added two bar tables with two 26” bar height stools, with a magnetic wall Scrabble game above one of the bar tables. A 48” magnetic chalkboard (my nieces’ favorite), a dartboard and a console table with two more 26” bar height stools were added to the room, giving us eight bar stools for the game room and bar side of the basement.
Family Lounge Area
At the other end of the basement, we added a large TV and an entertainment center that we created with four 4x4 Ikea Kallex shelf units, along with an additional 1x2 Kallex shelf set on each side. Ideally, the cubes were to hold our sports memorabilia, but we have filled them with photo albums (at our kids’ request) and our grandson’s toys. I framed with Jersey display frames some of our special jerseys/sweaters/shirts to represent our San Francisco Bay Area family beginnings, but will be adding my autographed Jimmie Johnson jersey to represent our family’s future in our new Bay Area (San Diego).
A Family Favorite
This room has become a family (and friend) favorite. Even though our house is far from done and we are still learning how to manage our “off-the-grid” utilities, our kids have enjoyed hosting their friends in the space. They’ve all voted that if we ever have to quarantine again… they are doing it all together in our basement. What a world we live in!

Over the past month, we've been working on several projects (paint, flooring, the roof, the basement, the guest suite, the basement, the main floor, removing wallpaper in the primary suite, and the kitchen) at our Enchanted Farmhouse, and we're SO CLOSE to completing Stage 1 of our kitchen update!

Kitchen update - from pink to black, white and blue. I’m so happy with the way it turned out. On my wish list for the future… new countertop.
Enchanted Farmhouse
After a hiatus for the holidays with a focus on fixing and not updating, and a fantastic pre-Christmas 11-day Caribbean Cruise, that I can't wait to share, we are back at our Enchanted Farmhouse with some updates!
I wanted to share our main floor Powder Room update. We didn't love how it turned out because we had decided to not replace the sink, vanity and mirror. It was going to be a demo-job which we’ll group with our bathroom remodels in a later phase. Our big investments following the purchase of our home was to start with the flooring, roof, new garage doors, and guest suite drywall repair.
We updated the flooring with tile purchased and installed by Empire Today. I've mentioned in earlier posts that we used them on our last home, and really liked how they worked, their subcontractors, how quickly they install, and their competitive pricing. We did have to wait three weeks for the tile, but I love the black tile with black grout, and as much as I like our other tile choice, I would love a lot more of this product in my house.
We replaced the faucet as the old one leaked. Rick did a little plumbing work to get it all tight. We also had this same faucet at our old house after a bathroom remodel, and I loved it.
Additionally we updated the knobs on the cabinet with Ravinte Matte Black Square Kitchen Cabinet Knobs, the toilet paper holder and the towel ring. While we removed the magazine rack and wall cabinet.
We do need to add artwork to the walls.
Rick painted the walls and ceiling “ice cube” by Sherman Williams, and that's where we stopped.
Not loving how it turned out.
I decided to paint the cabinet black and the walls a dusty yellow. I have been adding a splash of yellow around the house as an accent, and I'm really liking it.
I painted the cabinets black with the same paint I had painted the lower kitchen cabinets, Gilden Grab n Go Black Semi-Gloss. I like it much better.
Now I'm not sure if I should continue with painting the walls dusty yellow or keep them “ice cube.”
OR
This is where I need your help. What are your thoughts?
I can’t wait to share more updates with you as we continue making this farmhouse our own.
